STATION RECOMMENDATIONS

ARROW on UK dab digital in London, especially from about 7pm with "Classic Rock" back to back with streaming titles and artist information.

BBC RADIO BERKSHIRE apart from the usual good BBC spoken word content they have Phil Kennedy and Graham Gilham doing music shows on a Sunday. They also carry the rather splendid Paul Miller phone in each weekday evening. Since moving location this station comes in quite well in my part of Middlesex

BBC ESSEX  Covers the county of Essex but its signal reaches outer london on all of its am frequencies with 765 Khz being the best.   This station will be running a commemorative programme lasting a week in April which will commemorate offshore radio off the coast of Essex in the sixties.  Well worth a listen because Keith Skues, Dave Cash and others will be there. It will base its programmes on Light Vessel 18 in Harwich Harbour, this has hosted several RSL tributes to the genre of offshore radio and music over the past years.

BBC 3 COUNTIES RADIO Covers Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire and spills out into nearby areas like Uxbridge.  Puts out BBC Eastern Counties at night and the excellent Keith Skues.  I will be listing other great programmes in our diary of recommended programmes.

BBC LONDON  A contrast to most of the BBC locals with a slightly more professional but "distinct" style of presentation and programming to my mind.

BBC RADIO NEWCASTLE

Heard by the Waffler in September 2003 with a good range of music and talk shows.  Definitely a real local feel and dialect to most of the presentations team.

BBC RADIO NORFOLK

Audible on am in North West London and home of the fantastic Keith Skues evening show.  Many other great programmes from this station.

BBC RADIO TWO - with the exception of a Sunday when the schedule goes to very old styles of music, some of which are quite good.  Good rock and pop for adult listening.  Wogan, Ross, Allinson all excel. Also home of Brian Matthew's Sound of the Sixties and the Johnny Walker drive time show.

BBC RADIO FOUR  A real gem and full of interesting speech programmes. Sadly lacked a listing here until December 2007, due to me being thrown off the scent by digital radio developments!.  Brain of Britain and many other quiz programmes.   Gardener's Question Time, Desert Island Discs, Today Programme. Lots more as well.

BBC RADIO SUFFOLK

Heard by the Waffler in October 2003 and a neat little station with a good range of programmes.

BBC 6 Music - an excellent rock and pop station with intelligent items on music and performers etc.  Similar style to some of GLR's programming and using announcers who know a lot about the music they play. On uk national dab radio.

BBC 7 on uk national dab. Really good vintage comedy, drama and speech. They phase these goodies across the day and repeat them three times approximately which means you do not miss anything.   Listings in Radio Times, or if you have cable like I have - I check their mini guide by scrolling through. Also on Sky

CHILL on London Drg network and other UK dab outlets   A new station started at the end of March 2005 in London. Plays a mixture of Chill tunes by groups like Moby, Air. Also have heard U2 and Tim Buckley.  Bit irritating at the moment with recorded announcements by young lady reminding you to relax, but different form of radio worth checking out.   My wife loves doing her houswork to this station so it cannot be bad.  Still on air with announcements - a fun chill station!

CLYDE 1  A Scottish FM radio station which enjoys national coverage on Freeview. Quite amusing to listen to the adverts for shops etc in Glasgow etc.

CLASSIC FM  The national classical station on FM, DAB, Sky and Cable.

EASY RADIO LONDON on Dab Radio in London - a mix of really good oldies and up to date stuff, with a dash of Country Music. Run by Avtar Lit of Sunrise Radio. Uses jingles occasionally which resemble the offshore sixties Big L ones.  Ron Brown on the station as well is excellent, so are most of the other presenters.

FUN RADIO on london dab - the successor to the rather old fashioned Abracadabra radio with was on from the start of Dab Radio.  It has a lively feel to it and does have some presenters and plans to incorporate more features and spoken content.  Be warned in case you think this is an adult programme - this is radio for children and it has quite a unique on air sound. I think if Kenny Everrett was still with us he would enjoy doing the odd show for this station

GOLD - thought I would just mention that this replacement for Capital Gold and Classic Gold Radio on numerous frequencies on the am band and on DAB etc is not the best radio station in the world.  It does however at the moment have Mike Sweeney on drive time which is great.  Also Kid Jensen on breakfast, but sadly with another female presenter.

ISLE OF WIGHT RADIO 102 and 107 FM on the Isle of Wight, also audible in Bournemouth and areas bordering on the Island.  This station has "real announcers" who say things worth listening to.  Play oldies and current hits.

LBC News 1152 AM is the sister station of LBC 97.3FM.   1152 AM provides non-stop news for London with...
  • London's headline news every fifteen minutes
  • Weather, traffic and travel every ten minutes with the new Sky Patrol helicopter
  • Business news twice an hour live from the City
  • London's showbiz news from the entertainment desk as it happens
  • Sport every 30 minutes. Douglas Cameron is still there covering the news - essentially a rolling news program and not one that I feel will last in London, check it out whilst it is still there in muddy mono. Goodness knows how many listeners they has lost by moving the more popular LBC to 97.3 FM in London and changing a lot of the shows and presenters!

LBC 97.3 - in spite of the changes still the best of the two stations with a phone in element.  I have listed a few programmes in the main weekly and weekend section.  They are now on dab in other areas and have adopted the ghastly ident of "London's Biggest Conversation".

MOJO RADIO - available in the Uk on Freeview TV - very good station free to air with Classic Soul and Rock with a few from the sixties.  Well worth a listen. Do not leave your tv turned on too long with the station image on screen - route it off to your hi fi from the audio connections on your box and switch the tv off.

PASSION for the planet - on DAB in London and other areas.  Good Adult orientated rock and more up to date material with world music. No presenters but regular alternative health and therapy and environment features.  Some of these are interesting, some may be commercials in a a diffent guise.  The team is getting more polished. Different and worth listening to for a few hours.

Q RADIO on Freeview - for good rock music. Do not leave your tv turned on too long with the station image on screen - route it off to your hi fi from the audio connections on your box and switch the tv off.

RADIO CAROLINE

I now hear Caroline on my free to air Sky box.  The astra satellite audio is far better than worldspace and does not cost me a penny (well £139 for the box in the first place!)

Worldspace Afristar Satellite  and new rock and pop.  Sad thing is that Worldspace have made this a subscription service. My earlier comments:  Enjoy the tests and make up your mind whether you will be paying for the real thing when live programmes launch again. A delight to hear Radio Caroline again and in such good quality and stereo!  Caroline started regular programmes on a test basis in September 2002.  You are expected to pay a subscription in October 2002 in order to remove encryption that will stop you listening without paying!

RADIO JACKIE

On 107.8 FM in South West London, audible in North West with a good aerial. Yes Geoff Rogers and some of the original Radio Jackie team are back with the original jingles and a fantastic mix of anorak oldies and new material. Well worth a listen - also available on line.  Good to hear a commercial station which dares to speak to and with it's listeners and play a range of music as well.  Great nostalgia but no risk of getting stuck in the past with these guys!

RADIO LONDON Big L from Frinton courtesy of Ray Anderson on 1395 Khz am, currently off air.  Also on Sky with good audio.  Well worth a listen.  News reading on the station is not very professional to my mind. The evening programme about psychic matters seems out of keeping with the format of a music station. Randall Lee Rose one of my all time favourites has a daily show.  Mike Read does a splendid morning show. Ray Anderson also is a superb broadcaster.  Make the most of this station I have a feeling it may not be on foreever

RADIO SAWA An excellent shortwave music and propaganda station in Arabic on various shortwave frequencies and FM in arabic countries.   I cannot understand a word they are speaking about but the mix of music and style of presentation is very lively

RADIO TATRAS INTERNATIONAL - from Slovakia on 1350am - audible in the uk just about at night.  Also now on Sky astra satellite - well worth a listen. Slovakian by day and at night English programming, hosted by people like Eric Wiltsher and Johnny Reece from Caroline. Also available on the internet

RESONANCE FM 104.4FM  Excellent access radio station on low power run by group of actors in London. Audible in NW London. Has shows like the backwards music show, calling all pensioners, speakers corner and fantastic off the wall avante- garde programming never before witnessed on the radio. Kenny Everett would have loved this one!

SMOOTH RADIO  A great music station with oldies and up to date music presented in a relaxed style.  In the late night early morning it still manages to put out it's Jazz output in a watered down form, currently hosted by Tony Myatt. Tony must be a good vintage now, he was around at the start of Capital Radio in 1973, but is still a great broadcaster.

SOVEREIGN RADIO  In Eastbourne on 107.5 FM - a local radio company station with some enthusiastic presenters with a format of up to date and older pop music.  A good local identity and also run in a friendly but professional way.  Sounds a little bit better than the usual run of the mill commercial radio station.

SOLAR RADIO on Sky. Soul music served up in an enthusiastic way by experts. It has its roots in pirate radio in the 80s JFM and others.  Well worth a listen and it is on 24hrs a day with soul and specialist dancemusic.

STARPOINT RADIO on Sky - plenty of soul and dance music, another station with pirate radio roots

TIME FM 106.6 in Maidenhead and round about. Was called Star FM. Plays hit music and oldies, some reasonable local programming. If you can pick it up worth a listen.

VIRGIN CLASSIC ROCK   on London dab started up in Summer 2004 and has presenters like Richard Skinner and Tommy Vance on it.  Automated station but the way the announcers are programmed in makes excellent listening.  For me it is heavy but not as heavy as Planet Rock and they play the sort of oldies that Radio Caroline do. No adverts at present so absolutely excellent. They trail what music is being played on Virgin on their text on dab which is very clever indeed considering the dab station is not live.  Overall more needs to be done with the text service on dab, some stations do not even put up the titles of tunes playing.

VIRGIN GROOVE on UK dab digital in London for non stop classic soul music.  They need to stream the information about the music, no presenters here and really good. This has been on dab in London from the outset. Only recently has it been revealed that it is run by Virgin Radio.   Only on dab in the Evenings now but on Sky 24/7.

WESTSIDE RADIO 89.6 Community Radio from Southall. Their breakfast show is lively and cheeky - well worth a listen on air if you can get their localised transmissions licenced by Ofcom.  Alternatively put westside into the web and listen online

WORLDSPACE

I got rid of my worldspace receiver in desparation of the loss of services free to air so can no longer pass personal content on this network.  Such a pity because this form of satellite radio really works and does not need a big dish on the side of your house. The company that runs it needs to raise revenue so is constantly encrypting stations hoping people will subscribe to the service.

More to follow over the months and years..................

PROGRAMME RECOMMENDATIONS

April 4th 2008

Sarah Kennedy is still on Radio 2 and her morning programme is full of some interesting if not daft chat, ideal for the early morning.  The review of the papers she does is very good.

Nicky Horne hosts The Classic Album Show every Sunday, 16:00-19:00

He also presents Sports Saturday every Saturday, 14:00-16:00

January 2nd 2008

Weekdays 8-10am.  Bringing the noise every morning with news, chat, gossip, travel, weather, banging tracks and suprise interviews! Make sure you wake up with the biggest brother of them all!   Not my choice of music but refreshing presentation and a good on air sound

Saturdays 2pm onwards Gary Crowley with excellent oldies and informative enthusiastic chat.  Classic Gold Digital in London and other parts of the country as well on am!

Saturdays Radio 2 Sounds of the Sixties with Brian Matthew back again - this is his second week back in the chair.  Well done Brian hope you are feeling much better and continue to broadcast for very many years more!   His voice sounded a bit croaky last week but on top form again this.

January 25th 2007

Almost forgot to update this section

Nick Ferrari with breakfast show on LBC, now also available on DAB in other parts of the country.  Occasionally has Ken Livingston Mayor of London on for phone in.  A great cheeky phone in at breakfast time.

Sounds of the Sixties BBC Radio 2 - Johnnie Walker is back covering for Brian Matthew - hope Brian does return to the air one day though.

Eric Wiltsher and Petra on RTI each and every Wednesday 21:00 UK time - some good music and adult and risque chat - refreshing radio on Sky, or via the internet

Roberto Petroni - on BBC 3 Counties Radio in Herts Beds and Bucks (and my area of NW London as well!) does a great talk based breakfast and phone in show.

Stephen Rhodes  - on BBC 3 Counties does a consumer programme on BBC 3 Counties Radio in the mornings after Roberto's Show.

BBC London Breakfast show - currently being hosted by a myriad of people whilst Jono Coleman is back in Australia looking after his ill mother - splendid work there!

14th July 2006

Henry Kelly show on BBC Radio Berkshire Monday to Friday 10am to 1pm - good talk interviews, news and travel with a mix of music.  Well worth a listen.

10th January 2006

BBC 3 COUNTIES RADIO 103.8 FM AND 92 FM

ROBERTO PERRONI WITH THE MORNING BREAKFAST SHOW, Good phone in with news and comment weekday mornings

SUNDAY around 10am Dave Lee Travis with music and chat

SATURDAYS around Midday - the great Ern and Vern Show

28th December 2005

Monday to Friday: 22:00 - 0100 North South Divide phone in on Wessex FM in Weymouth - Details from their site:  Alex “Big Al” Dyke has been broadcasting on British radio since 1984 and has worked for BBC Radio Solent, Ocean Sound, Radio Luxembourg, Radio Nova, Power FM and Contact 94 (France).

Since January 1991 he has been causing controversy right across the south coast with his daily Phone In on Isle Of Wight Radio.

His celebrity guests have included Andy Williams, Noddy Holder, Ant and Dec, Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs, ex Public Enemy Number One John McVicar, the Osmonds, Blues Legend B.B. King, Psychic Uri Geller, Dave Courtney and many many others.

What is your biggest criticism of local radio stations in the UK?

Dire radio presenters who have no idea about pace, timing and content. Many presenters are more than happy to fill their shows up with celebrity birthdays, horoscopes, surveys and all that rubbish.

What do you think makes a good radio show sound really good?

Its got to be interesting, entertaining, enjoyable and compelling. And if you can grab your listener by the ears and make what could be a bit of a dull day just a little bit brighter, then I think as a DJ youve done your job!

Alex Dyke is representing the radio stations in the South. Mike Elliot is representing the radio stations in the North. To find out more about Mike, click here!

To get in contact with North South Divided, text NSD and send your message to 81800 (Texts cost 25p plus your standard network charge) or E-mail northsouth@musicfunlife.com.

17th December 2005

Saturday 18:00 to 20:00 Network Gold with John Platt - excellent local programme which is networked on most stations around Stoke - caught it on the BBC player - a good variety of music

3rd November 2005

Sunday  2pm - 5pm  Classic Gold digital and am outlets Gary Crowley with "Sunday Hits on Request"  Good to hear this informative broadcaster with his distinctive and authorative voice on air - unusual to hear him on a commercial station?

1pm  Radio Jackie 107.8 Jenny Costello with good music and good intelligent chat between music.  Jenny has experience at both the BBC and commercial radio sector - worth a listen.

Mornings Talk sport breakfast show - lively conversation and phone calls - well worth a listen if you need something cheerful to listen to in the morning and you do not fancy Mr Wogan (one of my favourites)  This is a recommendation by the way from somebody who is not a sport fan.

14th June 2005

Monday to Friday Virgin Classic Rock Alice Cooper from 6pm with Rock music and some intelligent chat

Monday to Friday Mix 107 FM for South Bucks Amersham and Watford Simon James and Hill. Pop music with some rather interesting tongue in cheek chat and occasional spoof phone calls.  A refreshingly different type of show

16th April 2005

Monday to Friday

BBC Radio 2: Terry Wogan breakfast show. Yes Terry is still doing this show. The strangest thing is that each show continues to be as zany and entertaining as the last.  I remember my friends grannie listening to it in the 70s and now I do whenever possible.

Sunday

11am to 2pm approx 87.5 in London Bashment FM  ET with The Revival Show - splendid old reggae hosted by a totally unique presenter who tends to speak too much but is nice light listening and a contrast to the rest of this station's output. He also currently has a "Dilemma" in which he asks listeners to ring in and comment on a friend or another listener's problem.

4pm to 7pm Nicky Horne is back on Capital but this time Capital Gold, nationwide on many frequencies but also in London on the digital version.  Nicky plays classic album tracks.  Yes there are whole radio stations that do this now but it is well worth listening to what in essence used to be known as "Your Mother Wouldn't Like It" Nicky used to do this show on Capital Radio when it first started in 1973.

28th September 2004

Saturday:  Primetime Radio on London Dab 8pm David Allan with a good music programme

Saturday: Capital Radio 1584 London, DAB, and other parts of UK 21:00 to 23:00  Mike Sweeney with 60s classic radio. He also does special features and reads out information about groups - a good listen

Saturday 9am to 10am on BBC Radio 4 Home Truths with John Peel - interesting stories about real people from the mundane to the most serious subjects linked together by John - occasionally somebody stands in on this show

Saturday 8am to 10am Sounds of the Sixties with Brian Matthew - never afraid to get out obscure records from the BBC library a real gem of a programme

25th August 2004

Ron Brown on Easy dab in London

Monday - Friday  10 to 1400

Saturday - Sunday 1700 to 1900

A very good on air voice from a presenter who was on the original Jackie years ago (update on earlier information (update on earlier entry)

15th August 2004

Keith Skues BBC 3 Counties and all Eastern Counties radio stations on Monday evenings

Whenever Keith does his show he will feature on a Monday night recordings which were popular during the days of offshore radio. This is a spin off from 2004's Easter special Pirate BBC Essex.

World Music Radio 5915 Khz shortwave

Back to back music on a 24 hour basis.  Eventually some programmes will be put out but for the time being a nice leisurely break when dx'ing.   Run off a pc but the stations organisers broadcasting legally from Finland recognise the benefits of music and are playing it us free of charge.

Virgin Radio - Dab digital radio in London

Fully automated station with no adverts and fantastic old rock classics.  I think it its better than Planet Rock, although Tommy Vance does a very heavy rock show on Friday nights.  Personalities like Richard Skinner and Leoni Graham present shows but they are not done in real time but by doing voice ids on a pc based system and then programming in the tunes etc. Very clever cross-trailing of what is playing on Virgin Radio at the same time on the text data on digital.

Radio Caroline RSL until end of August 2004 on 1278 Khz am from Tilbury docks London

On 1 watt of power but gets out quite a long distance.  Reminiscent of the station near the end when the mast snapped!   When will the station realise that it needs to make itself accessible on a platform everyone has other than sky or worldspace?

12th January 2004

Easy Radio London 1035am and dab digital over London

The Ron Brown show at midday.  A great broadcaster who I believe used to be on Radio Jackie and then First Gold radio hosts a great music and chat show.

Jazz FM  102.2 FM in London and dab digital radio over most of the UK.

Tony Blackburn with the Real Party Night - this is the same show that I heard in York on Real Radio. Mr Blackburn with his brand of soul music. Saturday 17:00 to 20;00

Peter Young with on Sunday with the soul cellar and plenty of other distinctive newer Jazz and Soul. He also plays requests for listeners. A very knowledgeable and talented broadcaster. Sunday 13:00 to 16:00

Letter From America - with Alistair Cooke on BBC Radio 4 2045-2100, Friday 0845-0900, Sunday

Alistair is 95 year of age and still produces an excellent programme.  A vintage show and a talented spokesman and reporter.  When he first started to do this show it was not as easy to travel to the state.  I still have not done this but this man paints pictures of the politics and other aspects in my mind of this country vividly with words!

Broadcasting House BBC Radio 4 with Fi Glover Sunday at 9am

Yes this current affairs and talk programme is now hosted by ex GLR and BBC Five Live presenter Fi.  The author to the splendid book "Travels with my Radio"

26/11/03

RTE Radio 1 on Telewest 917 Ceili House Saturday 2100-2200
Kieran Hanrahan hits the road in search of the craic and live
traditional music session around Ireland. Good old fashioned
folk in high quality. Also broadcast on am which is receivable in
the rest of the UK. - probably on NTL and SKY as well

RTE Radio 1 on Telewest 817 Failte Isteach Saturday 2200-2300
Music song and story from the four provinces with Donncha O
Dulaing. A rather jolly man who tends to speak over the start of
tunes. Requests for a variety of folk and other middle of the
road style music.

11/11/03

BBC RADIO NORFOLK  ON SUNDAY

I heard these excellent programmes whilst away on a short break recently.  I took the details from the Radio Norfolk website, but true to tradition I do not recommend something either myself or a site visitor has not recommended.

16:00 John Taylor's Radio Times
Nostalgic music and song from the early years of the 20th Century with possibly the oldest broadcaster in the business!

18:00 Gold For Grown Ups With Paul Barnes
Paul Barnes brings you music of quality and style from the great jazz musicians of the 20th Century.

21:00 David Clayton's Early Night
If you fancy an early night, and haven't got a headache, then David's your man. Call in on 0845 30 50 007 [local rate] or text on 07786 200 951.

PETER YOUNG - "PY THE PORK PIE" WITH THE SOUL CELLAR

Well worth a listen on Jazz FM in London from 1pm to 4pm.  The old soul served up by a very professional and entertaining presenter.  Jazz FM in London really has diverted from its original remit of Jazz. Mind you so has Magic which had its routes in Melody Radio which was middle of the road classics from the 50s up to the 70s.

ANDY KERSHAW ON BBC RADIO 3

On Sundays at 2215 to Midnight

An eclectic serving of world and other music served up with enthusiasm and authority by Mr Kershaw; great stuff.

MALCOLM LAYCOCK WITH LISTEN TO THE BAND ON BBC RADIO 2

On Sundays at 2200

Malcolm used to do a big band on BBC Radio London; it is fitting that a long time fan and enthusiast and authority on this music has taken over this slot from Mr Dell.

DAVID JACOBS WITH THE DAVID JACOBS COLLECTION

On Sundays at 2300

David is still presenting radio programmes, and is also the chairman of Radio Jackie for which I have the upmost enthusiasm.  To all intense and purposes Radio 2 slides back to its Light Programme roots after Steve Wright's Love songs each week

5/11/03

A gap in recommendations but here we go with some new ones:

CLASSIC ROCK ON ARROW ROCK ON LONDON AND OTHER REGIONAL DAB NETWORKS

Dave Hickman plays two hours of real classic 60s and 70s rock with the minimum of chat. In fact some months ago there was no presenter, which I felt was better!   Tune in from 9 to 11pm.  The station also does play classic rock at times in the rest of the schedule, but this show stands head and shoulders above all.  (I have listed this before but worth another mention)

DRIVE TIME ON BREEZE CLASSIC GOLD ON LONDON DAB

Good to hear Tank Montana from Planet Rock on their drive time show which runs from around 4 to 7pm. He is one of my favourite new presenters and is Canadian.  A diversion from the Rock he normally plays and he refers to the show as Montana drive.

17/05/03

A jumbo section of  recommendations to catch up on here and although most are BBC Radio 2 we do not have a vested interest in their programmes watch this section for worldwide and uk recommendations over the year:

IMAGINATION SHOW with ROB LEIGHTON Radio Caroline on Worldspace and sky digital

Several days a week from 1pm to 3pm UK time

Rob used to run this as a radio station with rock music from the past and present but now sends this into Caroline and is broadcast from 1pm. He has a lovely calm voice, my wife thinks he sounds a little effeminate but she is not a Caroline anorak like myself.  If you can listen to this in the afternoon please do - there are plenty of surprises.  He plays a lot of the "loving awareness" promotions and music associated with the 70s and in very good quality as well.

NIGEL HARRIS BREAKFAST SHOW Radio Caroline on Worldspace and sky digital

7am to 10 ish Monday to Friday  (I believe is the correct time span)

Nigel has a great radio voice, and is very entertaining and informative to listen to in the morning. He worked under the name of Stuart Russell in the 70s on Caroline in the North Sea.  Unusually for Caroline there are announcements after each tune and a variety of new and old.  There is news at the top of the hour, very authorative and with reports inserted into it, so you will not miss any of the news at all.

BOB HARRIS SHOW BBC Radio 2  Saturday 10pm to 1am

Excellent rock and pop music from the man who used to be around in the 70s on the radio and the Old Grey Whistle Test, a rock and pop historian with a calm voice.  I first heard him use this format on BBC GLR and the section called "Rock Anniveraries" was used there as well.  Great treat if you happen to be in on a Saturday night. The programme extends into the wee small hours so something to rock to as you slip in to your pyjamas or nighties at bed time after a night out.

JONATHAN ROSS SHOW BBC Radio 2 Saturday 10 - 1am

Pure magic, and so un-radio 2. He normally starts with punk or a very noisy rocking tune.  He speaks with somebody in the studio and it sounds rather "laddish"  in nature.  He cannot pronounce "Rs" at we all know which is refreshing,; good to hear an announcer who does not put on a voice or airs and graces.  Listen to this if you have time to listen to all of the speech in between records.

SOUNDS OF THE SIXTIES BBC Radio 2 with Brian Matthew Saturday 8.05 to 10am

This is the definitive sixties music show of the week. Brian plays listeners choices and his own. They come from the largest gramophone library in the world at the BBC.  Last week he played a rare Cliff Richard song which started off very bluesy and then rocked. This was extremely crackly which is refreshing in this day of solid state radio stations which rarely play even a cd.   Brian was around in the sixties introducing numerous radio pop shows, and by jove his voice still sounds as young.

Adam Longworth XFM London 104.9 FM:Sunday MorningsI

I heard this last Sunday for the first time. I thought it could be taken as extremely offensive on a Sunday by some as Adam does a section of the show as "God" and puts on a special voice. People are asked for confessions about doing bad things during the week.  After listening it is in keeping with the alternative music station's image.  Alex Lowe (who I imagine must be Zane Lowe due to go to Radio 1?) used to do a splendid but equally irreverent version of Simon Bates Our tune in this section before this show came on.  If our dear Kenny Everett had lived a little longer I am sure that he would have got away with the "shock" and zany ideas that often got him the sack?

This is what XFM have to say about the show on the internet:

Late nights and Sunday mornings go extra large thanks to Adam’s banter, the best new music plus mystery guests and competitions, lightening up the darkest night and kicking off the new day with style.

The Freaks Are Unleashed…

Adam and his menagerie of characters play the best new music, plus your 'Life Or Death Requests', mystery guests, competitions and gig tickets giveaways.

Your 'fifteen seconds of fame' start here, with the cult 'Roll Call'. Phone in, be heard and join the ever-growing cast of characters, in this late-night club, where membership is 'freek!' Feel the evil vibrations of 'Don De Ville’s Satanic Underpants' and guess the colour, beat 'Old Sparky' or try and beat Adam at the 'Yes or No' game to win gig tickets, CDs and other goodies. Unplanned and totally unpredictable, it’s the show that's still got a lot to learn.

PICK OF THE POPS - DALE WINTON BBC Radio 2 : Saturday 2pm - 3.30pm

I was left thinking how can Dale replace Alan Freeman. The answer is nobody ever could but Dale brings something new and exciting to playing two old record charts and is as proficient at reading the chart countdown.

The Mystery Train - John Kelly and others: RTE Monday to Friday as far as I know from 7pm to 7.55pm

Jazz, Soul, Blues, Rock, Reggae, Blues, World Funk, Lounge, Dance, Rap, Trad and Folk.  A great show which I manage to hear on Telewest digital which has the radio station on it.  Some fantastic music with some quite informative and sometimes jovial comments from the announcer.

Keith Skues Show: BBC Eastern Counties stations (nearest to London 3 Counties):

Monday to Friday 10am to 1pm

Mr Magnificent with a unique blend of pop and nostalgia not to be missed. Unfortunately I am at the moment due to other commitments and another station on a frequency very close, not sure if it is an RSL or pirate.  It is fine downstairs but upstairs in the bathroom the station is blotted out. Keith sounds as lively as he did on the offshore station in the 60s. If you like big band or any form of eclectic music look no further than Mr Skues.

Irish Link with Gerry Byrne: BBC 3 Counties Radio:Sunday 2pm - 3pm

A really great sounding voice and he plays some interesting Irish music. When I listened last Sunday he played a very clever comic skit about "Morrow"

Dr Pam: LBC London 97.3 and digital :Monday: 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Tuesday - Thursday: 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

The Vintage Years: The Arrow on London digital and other parts of UK try your digital complex: Monday to Sundays with Dave Hickman 9pm - 11pm.  Two hours of classic rock from the 60s and 70s onwards.  Very little speech, well worth a listen.  After 11pm the station puts out non stop music.  I heard Bob Dylan, the Byrds and even a new track by Beth Orton on the 18th.

Now Show: BBC Radio 4 93 FM:  Friday 18.30 - 19.00pm Rpt: Saturday 12.30 to 13.00pm:  A comedy show with Steve Punt.  Quite funny but the episode I heard on line seemed to mention the "war" and "viruses" and could be considered to be in bad taste.

Gessner on the Hop - Worldspace Afristar Satellite: Bob Gessner is often on this excellent oldies station in the mornings presenting records from 50s, 60s and 70s.  Plenty of energy like Laser in his voice. Listen to the Hop regularly for some superb oldies 24 hours a day. They are often American Oldies which makes for great listening back to back tunes!

BBG on Orbit Rock - Worldspace Afristar Satellite: BBG is often on around 6pm onwards with classic rock music from the 60s and early seventies. Plenty of good music back to back 24 hours round the clock with a presenter in the evenings, well worth a listen.

Terry Wogan Show - BBC Radio 2 88 -90 fm : Terry Wogan presents a lively music and chat based breakfast show from 7.30 to 9.30 Monday to Friday. He is joined by colleagues who often join in on the jovial chat which is fed by mail and email on the light side of life. Producer Paul Walters is referred to as Paulie and Doctor Wally. John Marsh the newsreader has the nickname of Boggy.  His deputy at the present time is none other than Johnnie Walker The playlist is adventurous from the Rolling Stones through to the likes of Badly Drawn Boy. Radio 2's playlist is intended to be easy on the ear but includes current chart songs, some of female singers who sound like they are whining to the waffler.

Jeremy Vine Show - BBC Radio 2 88-90 fm: A current affairs and consumer based programme delivered in an authorative but relaxed manner, laced with good quality music from today. Originally, and still on a weekend at present, a TV presenter he has taken to the programme very well. I knew he had made it when he persistently complained on air about how quickly he lost umbrellas. Show is on air from midday to 2pm Monday to Friday.

Johnnie Walker Show -BBC Radio 2 88-90 fm: The once rebel from Radio Caroline is at home on R2. He has guests on the show and has jovial chats with Sally Boseman the traffic reporter on the show. He has a feature called Cruising where he plays Rock and other tracks for motor biking and motoring to. On air Monday to Friday 5pm to 7pm Monday to Friday.

Ernie and Vern  - BBC 3 Counties Radio 103.8 fm, 104.5 fm, 95.5 fm, 630 am, 1161 am: Ernie Armand and Jonathan Vernon Smith put out a daft phone in show and pull it off superbly.  You have to listen to it to believe it. There is currently a serial called the Gym on air which is funny.  I will try to put a clip from this on the Sound and Vision site soon.    The show is currently on air both Saturday and Sundays from 12pm to 2pm. If you are within earshot of these transmitters - spoil yourself.   They bring some very amusing characters to air (they are of course playing along with this team of broadcasters!)

Dave Lee Travis Show - BBC 3 Counties Radio 103.8 fm, 104.5 fm, 95.5 fm, 630 am, 1161 am: DLT has returned to the BBC with a great Sunday show from 9 until midday.  He has a phone in element, the travel and traffic news. Today his studio guest was the lovely Anita Harris.  Great Radio

5/4/03

Tony Blackburn Breakfast Show - Classic Gold Breeze Digital and 828 Khz am and other frequencies: The show started on the 31st March and brings Tony back to weekday breakfast shows in grand style. There are rather too many people in the studio talking as well on the early shows. He will settle down in time. Worth a listen
